Referral website, not the contractor. How it works

A corrugated metal fence is allowed on Lubbock homes only with metal posts, frames, brackets and caps; HomeGuide puts steel at $25–$55+ per foot.

Solid steel panel fences, built from corrugated or ribbed sheet metal, are a West Texas privacy option that skips staining and doesn't rot. They're also the fence type with the most specific wording in local codes. Read the rules before you pick a panel.

What a corrugated metal fence is

HomeGuide describes it as metal panels pressed into a wavy or ribbed pattern, which adds strength while keeping the panels fairly light. The panels are mounted between posts on a frame. HomeGuide notes that frames can be wood or metal, but in Lubbock only one of those is on the approved list.

Most residential panel fences run 3 to 8 feet tall, according to HomeGuide, and the panels come in many factory colors.

Corrugated metal fence rules in Lubbock and Wolfforth

Rule Lubbock homes Lubbock businesses Wolfforth homes
Sheet or corrugated metal Allowed only with metal posts, metal frames, metal brackets and metal caps Prohibited for nonresidential and mixed-use fences Allowed with metal posts, brackets and caps; the code adds "No galvanized metal"
Height 48 in. in a required front setback; 10 ft elsewhere 8 ft (nonresidential and mixed-use) 4 ft in a required front yard; 8 ft elsewhere
Building permit Not needed up to 7 ft (§28.05.062) Ask Building Safety Ask City Hall, (806) 855-4134

What the table means in practice:

  • No wood frames inside Lubbock. A metal panel screwed to wood rails or set on wood posts doesn't match the UDC's wording. Ask the company to confirm in writing that posts, frames, brackets and caps are all metal.
  • Commercial lots are different. The nonresidential list in §39.02.020 prohibits sheet, roll and corrugated metal outright. Shops and storefronts in Lubbock need another material.
  • Wolfforth's galvanized limit. Wolfforth allows panel fences but says "No galvanized metal." HomeGuide recommends galvanized steel for most homeowners because its zinc coating resists rust, so a common panel may not qualify there. Ask Wolfforth's Building Permit Department how the rule applies to a painted or coated panel before you order.
  • Shallowater and Slaton don't post their fence material lists online. Call Shallowater City Hall at (806) 696-4300 or Slaton Building Services at (806) 828-2000.

Wind and hail on a solid steel face

A panel fence is a solid wall, just like a wood privacy fence, so the posts and frame carry the full push of the wind. For posts in general, a Lubbock fence company's FAQ on KCBD's website calls for a 24-inch minimum in concrete, going to 36 inches when the fence is taller than 6 feet or faces high wind. Ask whether the company follows that depth for a panel fence, and how far apart the posts will be.

Hail is the other local test. On May 20, 2020, baseball-size hailstones fell on parts of south-central Lubbock, according to the National Weather Service. HomeGuide says corrugated panels stand up to hail and extreme temperatures without warping, cracking or rotting, but it also notes dents and scratches from impact, especially on thin panels. Gauge is the number to ask about: a lower gauge number means thicker steel, which costs more and resists denting better.

What a metal panel fence costs

National figures, checked October 2026:

Item Price Source
Corrugated metal fence, installed $25 to $65+ per ft HomeGuide
Corrugated steel, installed $25 to $55+ per ft (25 to 40 year life) HomeGuide
Corrugated aluminum, installed $30 to $60+ per ft (20 to 30 year life) HomeGuide
6-ft steel privacy panels $27 to $36 per ft HomeAdvisor
Labor alone $8 to $20 per ft HomeGuide
Each extra foot of height Adds $5 to $10+ per ft HomeGuide
Gate $300 to $1,500+ each HomeGuide
Removing an old fence $5 to $15 per ft HomeGuide

By project size, HomeGuide puts 50 to 100 feet at $1,300 to $6,500, 100 to 200 feet at $2,500 to $13,000, and 200 to 300 feet at $5,000 to $19,500. The Lubbock fence cost guide shows wood, chain link, iron and pipe for the same lengths.

Upkeep and repairs

HomeGuide's maintenance advice is mostly washing the panels with water. Its repair figures:

  • Panel replacement: about $20 to $50 per linear foot
  • Post replacement: about $100 to $300 per post
  • Welding a damaged connection: about $100 to $500+

Touch up scratches that reach bare metal, and keep soil and weeds from piling against the bottom edge where moisture sits.

Metal panels against other privacy fences

HomeGuide's comparison puts corrugated metal at $25 to $65+ per foot with a 25 to 50+ year life, wood privacy at $25 to $60 and 15 to 20+ years, and vinyl at $30 to $60 and 20 to 30 years. Metal skips the staining wood needs and doesn't crack the way vinyl can in a hard freeze. Wood is easier to repair one board at a time and looks warmer. See wood fences, vinyl fences or the full privacy fence comparison.

Questions to ask before ordering

  1. What gauge and coating are the panels, and is the steel galvanized? (This matters in Wolfforth.)
  2. Are the posts, frame, brackets and top caps all metal?
  3. How deep are posts set, and how far apart?
  4. Is the panel edge trimmed or capped along the top?
  5. Will my HOA approve it? Texas Property Code §202.023 lets an HOA regulate the type of fencing even though it can't ban a perimeter fence.

Common questions

Is a corrugated metal fence allowed in Lubbock?

For homes, yes, with conditions. Lubbock's Unified Development Code lists sheet, roll or corrugated metal as an approved residential fence material only if it's built with metal posts, metal frames, metal brackets and metal caps. The usual residential heights apply: 48 inches in a required front setback and 10 feet elsewhere.

Can a business put up a corrugated metal fence in Lubbock?

Not under the current code. The UDC's list of prohibited materials for nonresidential and mixed-use fences includes sheet, roll or corrugated metal. Industrial sites have their own screening rules, so a business should ask Planning or Building Safety before ordering.

How long does a corrugated metal fence last?

HomeGuide puts galvanized steel panels at about 25 to 40 years and aluminum at 20 to 30, with installation, drainage and cleaning making the difference. Scratches that reach bare steel are where rust starts, so touch them up.

Will hail dent a metal panel fence?

Large hail can. HomeGuide says corrugated panels stand up to hail without cracking or warping, but notes dents and scratches from impact, especially on thinner gauge panels. A lower gauge number means thicker steel and more dent resistance.
