Where it is. The Texas State Historical Association places Shallowater on State Highway 84 (US 84) and the Santa Fe line, 12 miles northwest of Lubbock.
How it started. Land for the townsite was bought on May 18, 1909. The town and the finished railroad were celebrated on June 26, 1913. TSHA says the name "Shallowater" was chosen to attract settlers.
Farm town. By the time the town was established, the big ranches nearby were being divided into smaller farms. Cotton became a key crop, and TSHA later describes Shallowater as a farm marketing center.
