Frequently asked questions
How much does 200 feet of fence cost?
At national per-foot ranges checked in October 2026, 200 feet runs about $2,000 to $4,000 for chain link, $5,000 to $10,000 for a 6-foot wood privacy fence and $10,000 to $17,000 for ornamental iron. HomeAdvisor's average for a 200-foot project across all materials is about $6,900. The fence cost guide has more lengths.
What is the average cost of a fence in Texas?
We haven't found a Texas-only figure we could verify. Nationally, HomeAdvisor puts the average fence project at about $3,277, with most between $1,860 and $4,844, and Thumbtack's average is about $2,717. A Lubbock quote depends on material, length, height, gates and digging conditions.
How long does fence installation take?
HomeAdvisor says most professionals install a fence on a standard lot in two to four days. Permits, material delivery, slopes and taller fences can add time. Concrete around the posts also needs time to set before rails and panels go on.
Can a handyman repair a fence?
For small jobs, often yes: replacing a few pickets, re-hanging a gate or tightening hardware. Resetting posts in concrete, rebuilding a wind-flattened run or anything that needs a power auger is fence-company work. Digging 16 inches or deeper with powered equipment also triggers the Texas 811 notice requirement.
Wood or vinyl: which holds up better in West Texas?
Both are used. HomeAdvisor says vinyl lasts about 20 to 30 years with little upkeep, and a wood fence gives about 5 to 10 good years before it needs more serious care. Vinyl costs more up front (Thumbtack: about $19 to $35 per foot). Hail can crack or dent vinyl and split wood, so ask the company how replacement panels or pickets are priced.
What kind of fence stands up best to Lubbock wind?
Open fences such as ornamental iron, chain link and pipe let wind pass through. If you want a solid privacy fence, the posts matter most: a Lubbock fence company's FAQ, hosted on KCBD's website, recommends heavy steel posts set in concrete, 36 inches deep for fences over 6 feet or in high wind. Shadowbox styles let some air through.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Lubbock?
It depends on the project. Call City of Lubbock Building Safety at 806-775-2087 before you build. On corner lots, city guidance says no fence may extend into the right-of-way or the 25-foot vision-clearance triangle at intersections. See the fence rules guide.
Can my HOA stop me from building a fence?
Not entirely. Since 2021, Texas Property Code §202.023 has barred most property owners' associations from prohibiting a perimeter fence as a security measure. The HOA can still regulate the type of fencing, so get written approval for the style and material.
Do I have to tell my neighbor before I build?
HomeAdvisor notes there's generally no legal requirement to notify neighbors, but the fence must be on your side of the property line. A survey (about $200 to $545 nationally, per HomeAdvisor) settles where the line is. Talking first can save a dispute and may lead to splitting the cost.
Who has to call 811 before the posts go in?
Texas law puts the duty on whoever digs. Anyone using powered equipment such as an auger to dig 16 inches or deeper must notify the state's one-call center at least 48 hours before, excluding weekends and holidays. Ask the fence company who places the request, and mark your own sprinkler lines, which aren't covered.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence blown down by wind?
Usually, if your policy covers wind. The Texas Department of Insurance says fences are typically paid at actual cash value, so depreciation is subtracted and you pay your deductible. Ice and snow damage to fences often isn't covered. See fence repair.
When is the best time of year to install a fence?
HomeAdvisor says fence crews slow down in late fall and winter, which can mean better rates and more open schedules. Around Lubbock, spring is the windiest season (April is the windiest month in The Weather Channel ranking reported by KFYO), so a fence finished before spring has its posts set before the hardest wind.
Should I use steel posts or wood posts?
For a wood privacy fence here, steel. The KCBD-hosted FAQ from a Lubbock fence company recommends heavy metal posts because wood posts rot and work loose in their concrete. Ask for the post size and wall thickness in writing, since thin-wall posts look the same from outside.
Who does the work if I send a request through this site?
An independent local fence company. Lubbock Fence Install is a referral website and doesn't build or repair fences. We send your request to one company, and it handles pricing, scheduling and the work on its own terms. Read how it works.
