Referral website, not the contractor. How it works
A Lubbock privacy fence is a solid fence 6 to 8 feet tall; HomeGuide prices 6-foot wood or vinyl at $25–$60 per foot.
Lubbock Fence Install is a referral website, not a fence company. We send your request to one independent local fence company. You never pay us; companies we refer you to may pay us for referrals. To ask for a privacy fence price, send a request with the form.
Most privacy fence questions come down to three choices: the material, the height your city allows, and how the posts will hold a solid wall against West Texas wind. This page takes them in that order.
Privacy fence materials side by side
Every option below blocks the view. They differ in what they cost, what they need from you later, and how they behave when a spring gust hits a flat face.
| Material | How private | Upkeep | National price, installed | More detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood (cedar or pine pickets) | Solid when built; boards can shrink and open small gaps | HomeAdvisor says wood needs regular cleaning and staining | $25 to $50 per ft (HomeGuide) | Wood fence |
| Vinyl panels | Solid interlocking panels | Washing; HomeGuide notes vinyl can crack on impact or in extreme temperature swings | $40 to $60 per ft at 6 ft (HomeGuide) | Vinyl fence |
| Corrugated or ribbed steel panels | Fully solid | Occasional washing | $25 to $55+ per ft (HomeGuide) | Corrugated metal fence |
| Composite boards | Solid | HomeAdvisor says minimal, though it can fade in direct sun | $55 to $85 per ft (HomeGuide) | Ask the company |
| Chain link with privacy slats | Partial to mostly blocked | Low | $14 to $48 per ft (HomeGuide) | Chain link |
HomeAdvisor's national average for a privacy fence project is about $4,300, with most between $1,800 and $8,000. Prices were checked in October 2026 and are national, not Lubbock quotes.
Check the material list for your city. Lubbock's Unified Development Code names the materials a residential fence may use: masonry, ornamental metal, cedar or whitewood, composite, vinyl, chain link, and sheet or corrugated metal built with metal posts, frames, brackets and caps. Wooden picket fences are allowed only with metal posts, brackets and caps. Wolfforth's list is similar but bans chain link for homes. Bamboo, which shows up in national price guides, isn't named on Lubbock's list, so ask Building Safety before choosing it.
How tall can a privacy fence be?
Height is where privacy fences run into the rules. The limits differ a lot between the two towns that post them.
| Lubbock | Wolfforth | |
|---|---|---|
| Back and side yards | Up to 10 ft (UDC §39.02.020) | Up to 8 ft for a solid fence (§14.05.009) |
| Required front yard or setback | 48 in. maximum | 4 ft maximum |
| Building permit | Not needed for fences up to 7 ft (§28.05.062); taller needs one | Ask the Building Permit Department, (806) 855-4134 |
So an 8-foot privacy fence is allowed in a Lubbock backyard, but it needs a building permit, because the exemption stops at 7 feet. In Wolfforth, 8 feet is the ceiling for a solid fence; only a mostly open fence can go to 10. Shallowater and Slaton don't post their fence heights online. The fence rules comparison has the full table and phone numbers.
The KCBD-hosted FAQ from a Lubbock fence company says 6 feet is the most common fence height in West Texas, and that taller fences around town are usually 7 feet. HomeGuide puts an 8-foot privacy fence at $50 to $85 per foot, against $25 to $60 for 6 feet.
A solid fence in a windy city
The Weather Channel ranks Lubbock the third-windiest U.S. city of its size, with April the windiest month (as reported by KFYO). A privacy fence has no gaps for that wind to pass through, so every foot of it pushes on the posts.
What that means by material:
- Wood and metal panels hang on posts you choose. The KCBD-hosted FAQ recommends heavy metal posts over wood or light-wall metal, set at least 24 inches deep in concrete, and 36 inches for fences over 6 feet or in high wind.
- Vinyl uses its own hollow posts. Fixr's guidance for wind is posts 3.5 to 5 inches square with thick walls, set in concrete 1.5 to 2 feet deep, and post inserts are sold to stiffen them. HomeGuide says builders recommend aluminum posts to keep vinyl privacy panels from blowing over.
- Partial privacy styles such as shadowbox wood or slatted chain link let a little air through. They screen most of the view, not all of it.
If your yard backs onto an open field or a wide street, that side takes the hardest wind. Ask the company whether it changes post size, spacing or depth there.
What a privacy fence costs by length
HomeGuide publishes totals for a 6-foot wood or vinyl privacy fence. The 70-foot row is our arithmetic from the same per-foot range.
| Length | National installed cost (6-ft wood or vinyl) |
|---|---|
| 50 ft | $1,250 to $3,000 |
| 70 ft | $1,750 to $4,200 |
| 100 ft | $2,500 to $6,000 |
| 150 ft | $3,750 to $9,000 |
| 200 ft | $5,000 to $12,000 |
| 300 ft | $7,500 to $18,000 |
| 500 ft | $12,500 to $30,000 |
HomeGuide puts labor at $10 to $20 per foot of that. HomeAdvisor's privacy fence page adds a land survey at $250 to $1,000 if you don't know where the line is. Gates, tear-out of an old fence and harder digging are extra. For gates and other line items, see the Lubbock fence cost guide.
Picking a privacy fence for your yard
- Backyard shared with neighbors on two or three sides. Wood on steel posts or vinyl are the usual choices. If you're splitting the cost with a neighbor, read fences between neighbors in Texas before anyone pays.
- A side that faces an alley or a field. Slatted chain link costs least in Lubbock, but not in Wolfforth, where chain link isn't allowed for homes. Metal panels are another low-upkeep option.
- You never want to stain anything. Vinyl, metal panels and composite skip the staining that wood needs. If you choose wood anyway, fence staining covers cost and timing.
- The front yard. A tall privacy fence isn't allowed in a required front setback in Lubbock (48 inches) or Wolfforth (4 feet). An open wrought iron fence is the usual front-yard answer.
- An HOA neighborhood. Texas Property Code §202.023 stops most property owners' associations from banning a perimeter fence, but they can still regulate the type of fencing. Get the material, height and color approved in writing first.
Questions to settle before you sign
- What material, height and style, and does that height need a permit in my city?
- What are the posts made of, how big are they, and how deep do they go?
- Which side faces my neighbor, and is that what my HOA requires?
- Who places the 811 locate request before digging?
- Is removal of the old fence included, and what happens to it?

Common questions
How much does 200 feet of privacy fence cost?
HomeGuide puts 200 feet of 6-foot wood or vinyl privacy fence at about $5,000 to $12,000 installed. HomeAdvisor's broader range of $10 to $50 per foot works out to $2,000 to $10,000. Both are national figures checked in October 2026, before gates or tear-out.
What is the cheapest privacy fence?
In HomeGuide's national table, slatted chain link starts lowest (from about $14 per foot), then bamboo ($20 to $30) and wood ($25 to $50). Bamboo isn't named on the list of approved residential fence materials in Lubbock's development code, and chain link is prohibited for homes in Wolfforth, so check your city before choosing either.
Can I build an 8-foot privacy fence in Lubbock?
Lubbock's development code allows a residential fence up to 10 feet outside the required front setback. The building code's permit exemption covers fences only up to 7 feet, so an 8-foot fence needs a building permit. Wolfforth caps solid residential fences at 8 feet.
Does a privacy fence need steel posts?
A solid fence takes the full push of the wind, so the posts do the work. A Lubbock fence company's FAQ, hosted on KCBD's website, recommends heavy metal posts set in concrete, 36 inches deep for fences over 6 feet or in high wind. Vinyl systems use their own posts; ask what goes inside them.
